God doesn't belong in government. The Right Wingers ran America into the ground for eight years and we let them. If we've learned nothing else from having a bible-thumping idiot in the White House, we've learned not to let it happen again. Please do not encourage the disrespect of my Constitutional separation of church and state by attending this event.

Abortion is Legal -- Get Over It

The health-reform bill is using women's reproductive rights as a bargaining chip. I hope women will remember what politicians seem to forget when Election Day roles around, that we too have the right to vote. It was long overdue and a very rough road, so we treasure our ability to cast our vote for those who work the hardest for us and equally passionately against those who work against us. Abortion is also our Constitutional right and we will take our right to vote very seriously with regard to any efforts by those who believe more in fairy tales than in the rights of women and our health care.

Our Tax Dollars at Church

Silly me. I thought the United States would be a better place once Bush was out of office and either Hillary or Obama replaced him, but I see now that Obama is already making Bush-like promises to the religious right for the use of my tax dollars. Bush formed the Office of Faith Based Initiatives immediately upon his fraudulent first election success, giving our tax dollars to the clergy before anyone else whether we believe in god or not. I personally do not and while I understand that Obama is willing to say whatever is necessary to get into office, that affront to my constitutional rights should never have existed, let alone be extended beyond this administration and/or expanded to give them more money and greater power. Not only is it a slap in the face to the separation of church and state, it smacks of prejudice against atheists, agnostics, and others who do not wish to have other peoples' unwelcome beliefs forced upon them. It seems religious freedom is a one-way policy when the Constitution is ignored for so long by so many.

It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's a Superbug!

A disturbing article caught my attention this morning that bespoke the ills of an infection allegedly spread among gays. I thought we had gotten beyond homophobic categorizing of diseases that can only be spread by gay sex, giving the self-serving bigots who have ordained themselves purveyors of the one truth the opportunity to coin sophmoric phrases like "gay plague" to foster their opinions and demean an entire segment of society at the same time. Apparently not. I thought science was above that, but there it was right next to the article about Huckabee wanting to change the Constitution to spread the word of his god over the laws of the land and the article about yet another evangelical scandal where the leader of one of the many megachurches conned a stupid woman into having sex with him for many years in the interest of salvation. And right between those two examples of how ridiculous religion is, was the headline: Drug-resistant Staph Found to Be Passed in Gay Sex . The article goes on to say how deadly this virus can be and how important it is to wash thoroughly, but aside from it pointing out how gay men stand a 13 times greater chance of catching this particular infection than heterosexuals, I saw nothing in the article providing evidence to that end. Gays should wash more than everybody else? Is that what they are saying? Or maybe they are saying that heterosexuals do not have anal sex. I could be wrong, but since this story smacks more of homophobia than science and since our press has lost the great respect I once had for it with FOX telling Bush's stories like they are true; CBS offering Dan Rather up as a sacrifice to the Bush Administration and waiting several days before getting angry at Imus for his racist and sexist idea of being funny, firing him only when their bottom line was in jeopardy; NBC and ABC picking and choosing which candidates are allowed to participate in the presidential debates, I somehow doubt the press and their ability to remain objective enough to stick to the real who, what, where, when, and why. Further, the politics behind the press which are so strongly influenced by the homophobic, anti-Semitic, racist religious right negate my ability to keep a straight face through an entire article these days.
