The Greening of Corporate America

If the average citizen was to throw a paper bag out of their car window or drive down the street without a muffler, they would be ticketed, and rightly so. So why do the major corporations of the world continue to spew forth the pollution that is bringing about the end of the world as we know it that much sooner than necessary, killing off endangered species as though they don't matter without fear of retribution? The answer is money. Like the HMOs, the NRA, the Automakers, and the Oil Companies, a well-placed dollar goes a long way to having government look the other way. The last eight years have given the worst producers of the earth's toxins a free ride with no danger of making changes to save the planet. As one of the people whose children will be most negatively effected by this eight year running start, I would like to see the guilty parties at the very least be made to adhere to a real plan to reverse the damage already done and begin creating environmentally compliant business practices and designs. If they fail to do so in a timely fashion, they should be punished criminally if not monetarily.

I don't know whether this guy is guilty or not, but it seems the new information and the witnesses recanting of testimony is worth giving this case another look before taking the man's life. What is the difference between this and murder? The same people who protest abortion, calling themselves right-to-lifers have no problem with capital punishment or picking up a gun to kill animals, calling it sport. Maybe they should rethink their name and call themselves something else. I know I do.

When Pigs Fly

Millions of wild pigs weighing up to 300 pounds have been marked for death by state Rep. Sid Miller of Fort Worth, Texas for shredding crops. He wants to begin issuing permits to aerial hunters to "solve" this problem. Since Alaska's Governor Palin has given permission to slaughter wolves and bears in the same manner, it was only a matter of time before the gun toting twits of that ilk in other states would devise a plot to join in on the fun. I spent just enough time in Texas as a kid to appreciate not living there as an adult, but never more so than now with the possibility of having good 'ol boys in helicopters flying above armed, probably with a six pack.

If the damage of the boars is as bad as has been described, I agree that something should be done, but I also agree that something should be done about world hunger. Rather than shoot these animals to lay them waste on the ground, no matter how tough and gamey the meat may or may not be, there are hungry people who could benefit from this not altogether bad situation. There are many people willing and able to supply funds necessary to arrange for a more humane trapping and distribution of the animalsWhere Does This Little Piggy Go? and the meat it provides. Why isn't Representative Miller worried enough about his starving constituents as well as his NRA ones? The carcasses, as it stands now, will be left in the field as it cannot be sold for meat under U.S. agriculture regulations.

An estimated 2 million wild hogs are causing $52 million a year in crop damage in Texas, according to agricultural experts, but by how much of an advantage can they be measured were they caught alive and distributed to agencies who will see to it they are butchered within legal standards and given to those in need. This is a bad situation that some politician wants to make into a worse one, but it can be turned into an excellent opportunity if handled properly.

Not Another "Be Sly, Lie and Deny" Administration in the White House

Romney has said a few things that turned out to not be true, so why would the American voters waste a vote on this guy? Do they think that once liars are elected, they stop lying? They don't. The lies just keep getting bigger and bigger to befit the office. Besides, why change a system that has obviously worked so well? The first ridiculous thing I heard come out of this guy's mouth was when he defended having driven with the carsick family dog on the roof of the car so he would not throw up inside of it. Romney said, "He loves it up there." I'm sure the animal loves being strapped to the roof of a vehicle traveling 55 to 65 miles per hour in a cage. Doesn't everyone?

I then heard Romney talk about his mormon faith and how he would not let "the church" influence him in running the country, regardless that he continued speaking through both sides of his mouth about how he believes that religion needs to be part of everyone's everyday life, criticizing people for insisting on the Constitutional separation of church and state. That smacks of the same arrogant dishonesty that is currently practiced in the White House by a man who is very much influenced by the religious right.

Then, Romney makes the claim that he was a lifelong hunter, followed closely by his admission that he had only been hunting twice. I do not know what made me happier; a politician getting caught in a lie before the election or learning, after the Cheney fiasco, that there would be one less lying armed politician in the woods.

More recently, Romney made yet another false claim regarding guns when he said the NRA had endorsed him during the gubernatorial campaign in 2002, only to hear from the NRA that they never endorsed him.

His claim that he saw his father march with Dr. Martin Luther King, fizzled until it was a figurative claim, never having actually seen the two men march together.

No, we do not want another liar in the White House and while we sometimes get one without knowing it, to elect someone who has been caught lying more than once is stupid
