Goodbye, Teddy!

(February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009)

For me and scores of other people, today is a very sad day for politics. For others on the other side of the aisle, there is rejoicing. That shows how powerful a Senator Ted Kennedy must have been. The Liberal Lion, as he was known never became President because of Chappaquiddick, but he became the most popular of Senators for a long career. Many would kill to make that claim, but the GOP has taken every opportunity to imply Kennedy was a failure. His must have been a very dark shadow in which to stand.

Mr. Dodd Goes to Washington

Wow! It worked. The FISA Bill granting immunity for the phone companies was put on hold. I have been criticized and told many times that writing Congress does no good, and I was starting to buy into that mentality, but for the first time, I got the impression that Congress is actually listening to us. I know I wrote and wrote and wrote some more, then signed petitions, thinking my words were being ignored, especially when it looked like the bill was going to be signed into law despite my writing. At the last minute, the bill was pulled after ten hours of Senator Dodd doing his best impersonation of Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, with him threatening to block the bill and it was temporarily tabled until after the first. While that is not as good as having immunity for the companies that sold out their own customers being removed from the FISA bill completely, it does give Chris Dodd, Russ Feingold, Ted Kennedy and senators of their ilk time to change enough minds to do just that in 2008. This is Chris Dodd thanking the people who voiced their valuable opinion against immunity for the phone companies Bush is protecting and maybe this candidate deserves another look.
